The Changing of the Guard

By Ryan McAdams on February 14, 2012

We are living in peculiar times.  I was thinking how amazing it is that we as humans seem to adapt to the conditions we find ourselves and almost become accustomed to whatever context in which we are living.  It can become all too easy for us to try and go on with business as usual and attempt to fit our lives into the turbulence that surrounds us, even when the times require from us a different response.  For many it’s just easier that way I guess.  Matthew 24:37-39 says, “The coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.  For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.”  It’s pretty important that we receive understanding from the Lord.

On New Year’s Day morning, I had a dream in which I saw a large lever on a wall, covered with dust and cobwebs, and a hand came and grabbed the lever and pulled it down.  I then heard the Spirit say, “It is a changing of the guard.”  I woke up and thought, “Wow, what does that mean?”  I found out that the phrase “changing of the guard” was originally used to refer to the event when the guards of Buckingham Palace (in England) would change so that new guards would replace them to take on a different shift as watchmen.  Generally, the phrase can be used to refer to a situation in which there is a dramatic or big change, or when new people are replacing other people in positions of importance.  A “changing of the guard” can come as an elaborate ceremony with great fanfare like at Buckingham Palace, but it might also come quietly without great emphasis.

So what does the dream mean?  What is clear is that God is revealing that we have come to a certain end and that 2012 marks the beginning of a new phase in the Spirit.  I believe a significant shift has occurred and that we are transitioning into a new epoch in relation to heaven, however quietly it passed on New Years.  The lever I saw was covered with dust and cobwebs, as if it hadn't been touched in generations or maybe ever...but now the time had come for its release.  What this fully means I don't know, but I feel in my spirit that we have entered a very significant season in God's Kingdom program and that massive change is at our doorstep.  In my dream, it was like the lever that was pulled controlled some massive machinery and now the wheels and gears were being put into motion and sprung into action.  Something is being released, as one phase of God's program is now giving way and transitioning to a new one.  I sense a manifestation of God's glory and new wine to go along with a new wineskin.  This year something is coming forth and we need to make space for what He wants to do.

We need to embrace and prepare for the great shaking that is coming with this great shift. Hebrews 12:27 says, Now He has promised, saying, ‘Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.’  This expression, ‘Yet once more,’ denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.”  I believe that we are entering into the “Yet once more” of Hebrews 12:27 – the removing of those things which can be shaken.  The Lord is working more aggressively by His grace and mercy to strip the Church of the earthly and natural, so that we can be securely grounded in the spiritual and unmovable realm of the eternal.  This is no small endeavor to us who live in America and to many of us who are living the American dream.  With understanding of the times, it's critical that we give ourselves to what the Lord wants to do in us and through us this year.  I believe this involves a intensive reordering of things in the Church and in our individual lives - a re-calibration of the Body of Christ and a scrapping of the many forms and systems, both spiritually and naturally, that have occupied us and functioned to take the place of that which is essential - that is, Christ Himself.  Christ in us, the hope of glory is what the Father wants to establish, for Jesus is the only hope we have to face what is coming just around the corner.

By the sheer force and magnitude of the conditions we are to face, what we have of Christ on the inside is going to be tested.  I believe this new phase we have entered will be particularly focused on a harvest of souls and the preparing and anchoring of the Bride of Christ for the storms ahead.  The natural must be shaken from us, so that what remains is the eternal, for Christ must be all in all in us and through us.  To those with understanding, the earthly is going to give way to the heavenly, “so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything” (Colossians 1:18).  There will be a people who will walk in full agreement and partnership with the Bridegroom, rooted in heaven, and who will know their God and do great exploits.  These ones will not only walk in realms of glory we have only dreamed of, but they will be hidden in the shadow of His protecting wing.  Yet it will cost each of us to move with God by faith and walk in partnership with the Bridegroom.  We must lose to gain.  "He who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal" (John 12:25).  To be rooted in heaven we must let go of earth, consciously and deliberately.  Grace is available now to get free and shake off this world so that you may gain Christ.  Be encouraged - if you seek Him, He will show you how to move forward.  These are the "days of Noah", go after Him with a whole heart and do not turn back!
